All who have salvation through faith in the name of the Son of God have been redeemed. Short version, we have been rescued or ransomed. This is the price for our freedom and it came with a cost. For nothing is ever free. Let’s learn what the cost was to receive this redemption.
What Is Redemption?
Ephesians 1:7 KJV In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
redeemed-1805-eksagorazo (from 1537/ed, “completely out from” which intensifies 59/agorazo, “buy-up at the marketplace”)… (HELPS Word-studies)
The image of redemption is of someone buying a slave. It is paying a price to retrieve something that was once yours but it was lost. It is to buy in order to be the sole owner.

Before we go into this it will help to know what salvation or redemption is not. It is not to make someone a better person. Redemption is not about wealth, possessions, ease or pleasure. Redemption does not concern itself with our outside life but our inside death. We need to be redeemed from what has power over us. We can not be right with God without being redeemed. This means every believer has experienced two different ways of life. Unredeemed they lived as a slave to sin. After salvation they are a slave to God.
What Do I Need To Be Saved From?
Galatians 3:10 KJV For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. 12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
We all need to be rescued, redeemed or saved from the curse of the law. What curse, you might ask? Deuteronomy 28:15-68 gives a detailed list. The point is, God demands His laws be kept perfectly and always (James 2:10). Not only is following the law perfectly non-negotiable but the attitude and motive must be pure or holy as well. No one has the ability to do that and the payment for breaking one of God’s laws is death (Romans 6:23). The curse of the law is eternal death because the law can not make anyone right with God (Romans 3:19-20). To even want to obey the laws of God is against our very nature because we love to sin which makes us a slave to sin (Romans 6). But God does not want us left in this condition. God does not want us to be His enemy.
What Does Redeemed Mean?
The law has no mercy, grace, forgiveness, and never takes a break. But the law has a purpose.
Romans 7:7 KJV What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
It is the law that shows us we are sinful. We do not know sin without the law showing us our sins, God’s law is written in the bible and on the hearts of people (Romans 2:14-15) but the purpose of the law does not stop there.
Galatians 3:24 KJV Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
The law is also to bring us to Christ. Why? Christ is the only One Who is able to rescue or deliver us out from under the curse of the law. How?
1 Peter 1:18 KJV Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
Where Does Redemption Come From?
Redemption comes through the precious blood of Christ who is the Lamb of God. That is, the blood of Christ redeems our soul from under the curse of the law, the wrath of God, being controlled by evil spirits, and our own lustful flesh (Ephesians 2:1-3). Why else do we need to be redeemed?
Ephesians 1:7 KJV In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Redemption includes forgiveness of sins. Everyone needs to be redeemed, forgiven, because everyone’s heart is:
Matthew 15:18 KJV But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: 20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
This is the heart of every unsaved person which is everyone before they are redeemed. I know I used the word every a lot but there is the teaching that you are really a good person on the inside and the problem is on the outside, that is a lie. God says, our problem is on the inside and the only solution is on the outside, redemption.
What Will Be The Outcome?
Death is a certainty. Yes, people have tried to cheat death in many ways but it will never be successful because only the physical body dies, the soul lives forever. When we die we go to judgment (Hebrews 9:27). The redeemed are judged by Christ according to what they did here on the earth and the unredeemed are judged at the great White Throne of God. God is keeping a record of every thought, word, attitude, motive, and deed that has been committed in books and the unsaved will be judged by those deeds. The problem is they believe their works are good enough for God to accept them only to find no one can work their way into the kingdom of God (Revelation 20).
Hebrews 9:12 KJV Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
What Is Waiting For Me Once I Receive Redemption?
Heaven, eternity in the presence of God, awaits those who have received eternal redemption.
The point is, no one is good, no one seeks God, no one is right before God. Apart from faith in Jesus Christ, no one loves God or His word on their own. The life of a sinner, is running the circle of one destructive sin to another. Because of this their heart thinks and desires nothing but sin. That is the heart thinks and desires what is opposing and rebellious to God. This is what redemption addresses. That is what the finished work of the cross of Christ offers to rescue us out of. This is what the blood of Christ bought for us because we could not buy it for ourself. Now we are taken out of the kingdom of darkness and are moved to the kingdom light. This only occurs by the blood of Christ (Colossians 1:13-14).
Praise God For Everything
Can you say, Thanks be to God I am not who I use to be. And say, I have been re-created in Christ Jesus and am now a new person. That is my heart loves the law of God and desires to be obedient.
Psalm 111:9 KJV He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name. 10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.
