The Bible says our heart and mouth play a massive role in our daily lives. When we talk, some of us pay attention to what comes out of our mouths, and some don’t. We say things we don’t mean, gossip, boast, and the list goes on.
The Bible will reveal that what you say truly is what you mean, and it comes from the heart. Therefore, let’s learn if what you say matters.
Does What You Say Matter?
Yes, because what we say either honors or disrespects God. Our words have the power to encourage people or to destroy them. The saying “sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt me” is a lie. This is not biblical, and God clearly tells us how our words effect ourselves and others.
Proverbs 18:21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
This scripture is describing someone who loves to talk and does not pay attention to their words. To eat of its fruit means what this person says will come true if they choose not to yield their mouth to the Lord. When this person continues to talk, then they will have consequences that come in their life. The power of life and death is literal. Therefore, this verse emphasizes that our words can either build up or tear down.
Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Matthew 12:36-37 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.
This means that on judgment day everyone will stand before God, and He will judge our words. Our empty words will condemn us if we don’t repent and surrender to the Lord.
Does Your Heart and Mouth Go Together?
Yes, our heart and mouth go together. How do we know this? Because the Bible says in Matthew 12:34, “…For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Also read Luke 6:45. This means that you will speak about whatever your heart desires.
Therefore, our heart is the place that is filled with who we really are. Biblically, our heart is defined as our inner man, which is who we are. So, when you open your mouth, your heart engages.
As a result, our attitudes and words come first, then an action. Our words and actions will reveal what we treasure in our heart.
Choose To Honor God With Your Heart and Mouth
Choosing to honor God with your heart and mouth takes persistence and lots of practice. How do we do this? By being in constant prayer for the Lord to open our ears so we hear our true attitude.
Each of us experiences hard times concerning our mouth. The hope is to learn from the experience, repent, and yield to the Lord’s teaching. This takes practice and does not come naturally. We do this through the Holy Spirit, who enables us to speak the truth with kindness.
Only then can we honor God with our mouths.
Deuteronomy 30:14 BSB; But the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may obey it.
We do this by being quick to listen and slow to speak (James 1:19–20). Therefore, God gives us every opportunity to glorify Him with our heart and mouth. Choosing to honor Christ with our heart and mouth is a conscious decision. Remember, it takes persistence and determination to focus on what comes out of our mouth.
Wrapping Up Your Heart and Mouth?
To wrap this up:
- The heart and mouth are one.
- God sees our heart and mouth.
- The Lord expects us to honor Him with our mouth; this includes our attitude.
- We are to repent of our empty words.
- God records every word we say and will hold us accountable if we choose not to change.
Therefore, we hope you know now that your mouth plays an important role in your life. God honors His Word, so the question is, do you?
There are plenty of Bible verses that talk about our heart, mind, and mouth. One verse in particular is the Lord looks at our hearts rather than our words, 1 Samuel 16:7.
Our words cannot please God unless we have a new heart and mind. We suggest reading our bible study on “Being Made Brand New.“
