Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed
Genesis 19:24 KJV 24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; 25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the
inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed by God but before we move forward, let’s ask why was it destroyed.
History Of Lot and How It Resembles Today
Genesis 19 tells us about Lot, his family, the city he lives in, and what kind of people live in the city. Verses 5-4 of Genesis 19 tell us all the people of the city engaged in violence and sexual immorality. Noah, his family, and society are described in Genesis 6. Romans 1:18-32 is a road map to why and how a person, city, or nation ends up under God’s wrath. Why is this important?
In Luke 17 Jesus is talking about His second coming. Before Christ returns society will resemble the days of Noah and Lot (Sodom and Gomorrah). There is no question the world is one more time filling the cup of iniquity. The world as a whole has gone the way of Noah and Lot (Sodom and Gomorrah). These people were devoid of God in their life, heart and mind. They pushed and did whatever it took to get what they wanted no matter what it cost or who it hurt.
The bible tells us in Genesis 19:13 …”The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.” God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah when there was a great crying against their sin to the Lord. How are we to stay focused as we see the useless reprobate thinking replace God’s knowledge and wisdom today?
Learn From Lot’s Wife Who Made a Choice
Luke 17:32 KJV Remember Lot’s wife. 33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.
Lot’s wife is a clear picture and warning of what happens when we do not keep our eyes upon the Lord. If your heart lies elsewhere then your life reflects that choice.
Jesus says society will embrace and welcome evil, wickedness, and sinful lifestyles. Cultures of today embrace sexual immorality, violence, hate, self everything, etc. Sin is displayed on every electronic devise sold. People are lovers of wealth, pleasure, ease, etc. and haters of God. In the midst of this do not forget Lot’s wife.
What does Jesus Mean in Luke 17?
Lot’s wife physically left everything behind. However, her heart stayed behind with her possessions. She may have left before the city was destroyed but she did not escape God’s judgment. We are increasingly
surrounded by wickedness. We have a choice to make.
I encourage you, to let go of this world. Do not compromise to save your lifestyle. This world is dying. This world can only offer death. God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, and the whole Jordan Valley (Genesis 19:23-25). Lot’s wife missed the destruction of her home however she died suddenly in her sin.
We Should Keep Our Eyes Looking Up
Colossians 3:1-4 KJV If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
Look for the coming of your Lord and Savior. God is our only priority. The glory of Christ is our purpose in life.
