Light Of This World, 1 John 1:5

The first bible study, “Jesus Our Eternal Life” makes sure we view Jesus as a real person. He was seen, touched, watched, and heard by the disciples and many other people. Through faith, believers have fellowship with God and His Son. Our fellowship with God and His Son fills us with His joy.

Our Walk Should Not Be In This World but With God

God laid out how we walk in fellowship and joy with Him. This brings us to 1 John 1:5. These verses contrast light and darkness, truth and lie. This makes it foundational to understand verse 5.

1 John 1:5 KJV This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Want to learn how to live in this world but not be apart of it? Read our bible study on “We Are The Beacon Of Light In This World but Not Apart Of This World“.

The message Jesus preached is, God is light and void of all darkness. What does light mean?

light – 5457 phṓs (a neuter noun) – properly, light (especially in terms of its results, what it manifests); in the NT, the manifestation of God’s self-existent life; divine illumination to reveal and impart life, through Christ. HELPS Word studies

Believers receive God’s light in the form of eternal life. The definition of light does not stop there.

Psalm 36:9 KJV For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.

Light and life are connected. Jesus proclaimed, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

 Let’s put this part together.

God, the origin of light, gives His light to believers. This comes in the form of eternal life through Christ. This makes light and life equal.

God ‘s Word is Light

Psalm 119:130 KJV The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

God’s word is received into our heart and mind. How? The Holy Spirit reveals the spoken word of God which is light.

John 17:17 KJV Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

The word of God is light and truth. What does this mean?

It means He can not lie ( Numbers 23:19, 1 Samuel 15:29, Hebrews 6:18).

Isaiah 40:13-14 KJV Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counselor hath taught him? 14 With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?

God being perfect light, truth, and holiness means He is never wrong. Which means He never changes His mind, word, or plans.

Hebrews 13:8 KJV Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Jesus Christ is God

God is light. Jesus is the light of the world. God gives light. Eternal life is given to those who have faith in Christ Jesus. God existed always. Christ Jesus the word was “with God and is God” (John 1:1-3).

Keep all this in mind. Why? God is light, life, and truth not us. And if we say we walk in the light, we must examine our walk to make sure it meets God’s requirements.

We hope this teaching brought more clarity on 1 John 1:5.
