God continues to tell us to take sin seriously and do not sin. But we know we still sin. So, Chapter 2 of 1 John gives us the solution to our sin problem. The chapter begins with who Jesus is, our Advocate. Why He is our Advocate, the Righteous. And How He became our Advocate, “He Himself is the propitiation for our sins.” We confess our sins so that through the blood of Jesus Christ we are cleansed of our sins.
Jesus showed us through His death how we are to love God and others. Loving other believers shows the world we are children of God. Loving the world shows the love of God is not in us. It is our love ( obedience) toward God that determines our fellowship with God and others.
Those whose heart walks and talks hate, hinders their fellowship with God and can guide others to live in sin. Hate is the contrast to love and has serious consequences. It creates spiritual blindness to the light, (truth).
A born again believer will live in faith, hope, and God’s love. This means we have a living hope that on Christ’s return we will not be ashamed. Instead, we will walk in love (truth) living righteous before God.

1 John 2:1
1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
Bible Study Notes
little children | teknion | 5040 | (figuratively) someone deeply loved (endeared) | We are deeply loved by God. As His children we are His beloved. |
advocate | parakletos | 3875 | (from 3844/para, “from close-beside” and 2564/kaleo, “make a call”)- properly, a legal advocate who makes the right judgment-call because close to the situation | What happens when God’s beloved ones sin? The Holy Spirit convicts our conscience and our response should be to confess our sin. There are things going on in the courtroom of God also. God- the Father sits as the Judge. Satan brings our sin before the Judge to accuse us of our guilt (Revelation 12:10). Fortunately, the scene does not stop there for God’s children. Our Defense Attorney, Christ, agrees we are guilty but our debt has been paid. This means our guilt debt to God was paid by His Son at the cross and the payment was approved of and accepted by the Judge. |
righteous | dikaios | 1342 | Cognate: 1342 díkaios (an adjective, derived from dikē, “right, judicial approval”) – properly, “approved by God” (J. Thayer); righteous; “just in the eyes of God” (Souter). See 1343 (“dikaiosynē). | The Judge declares us not guilty based on the righteousness of Jesus the Christ. We are never declared right in the eyes of God because of our own works. |
What Are We To Learn?
Being children of God means we are deeply loved (Ephesians 2:4-5). God’s love sent the Righteous One (Jesus) so through faith in Him, He becomes our defense attorney (advocate). We are guilty in our sin before God on our own (Romans 5:19, 2 Corinthians 5:21).
All of Jesus clients are guilty of sin and yet He goes with each of His own before God- the Judge. He can and does declare the guilty ones debts have been paid in full. Because the documentation of the debt we owed to God for our sins was nailed to the cross (Colossians 2:14).
1 John 2:2
2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
Bible Study Notes
propitiation | hilasmos | 2434 | properly, propitiation; an offering to appease (satisfy) an angry, offended party. Christ’s atoning blood to appease God’s wrath on all (confessed) sin… (HELPS Word-studies) | The cross of Jesus Christ satisfied all of God’s perfect wrath toward sin. |
sin | hamartia | 266 | properly, no-share (“no part of”); sin (missing the mark) (HELPS Word-studies) | Sin is the act of living life outside of God’s will. Making choices based on ourselves. |
What Are We To Learn?
Everyone sins because all have a sin nature (Romans 3:23). Though we say and see ourselves as good, we are not. No one is good (righteous), seeks God, does good, or fears God properly (Romans 3:10-18). This means we are all born children of wrath (Ephesians 2:1-3) and stand guilty before Him. How could God not compromise His holy and perfect nature and yet remove our guilt?
God sent His Son, the sinless Lamb, to satisfy and turn His wrath away. On the cross God the Father poured out all His wrath toward sin on His Son. The death of Jesus on the cross fulfilled the payment God demands of sin (Romans 3:23). Jesus is the only Way to the Truth concerning eternal Life because He died for our sins, was buried, and resurrected on the third day.
1 Peter 1:18 NASB knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
1 John 2:3
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
Bible Study Notes
hereby | en | 1722 | properly, in (inside, within); (figuratively) “in the realm (sphere of,)” i,e, in which something operates from the inside (within) | As believers God abides in us. We act out according to our inner influence. |
know | ginosko | 1097 | properly, to know, especially through personal experience with | God wants us to know Him and His will on a personal level. |
keep | tereo | 5083 | (“a guard”)- properly, maintain; (figuratively) spiritually guard (watch), keep intact | We determinedly guard our walk with Christ by conscientiously obeying His will. |
commands | telos | 5056 | properly, consummation (end-goal, purpose, such as closure with all its results)… It conveys the various stages that are reached to go to full development (eternal significance) | The commands of God are not for here only. They have eternal value to us. |
What Are We To Learn?
This gives us the “how” concerning knowing God and do I actually know God. We have a very simple way of examining our faith. What are the outward signs of salvation?
Do we yearn to know Christ as Lord and Friend ( John 15:4-15). Do we guard ourselves against sin to keep our fellowship with Christ unbroken. Is our view of life through the lens of eternity?
A lifestyle of sin and fellowship with God are not compatible.
1 John 2:4
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
Bible Study Notes
know | ginosko | 1097 | is the key NT term epistemology (“coming to know/understand”). This involves more than apprehending facts through the intellect. It includes all valid experiences of personally knowing God (His truth) | Our knowledge of God includes thinking, obeying, and experiencing. |
not | me | 3361 | (“not”) negates the underlying idea (concept) of a statement, ruling out its possibilities | Our words are meaningless when absent of action. |
liar | pseustes | 5583 | properly, a liar, someone who falsifies, misrepresents (distorts, misleads) | Words are used to hide and falsify the truth inside. |
in | en | 1722 | properly, in (inside, within); something operated from the inside (within) | We live from the inside out not the outside in. |
What Are We To Learn?
The religious studied the scriptures (Old Testament) diligently and missed the point. Jesus lets them know all their studying has not helped the them. Why? Because they read scripture from their viewpoint not Gods. On the inside no change has taken place. There are those who claim Christianity today but the following statement still holds true;
Matthew 15:7-8 NASB You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy about you, by saying: 8 ‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me. 9 And in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” (Isaiah 29:13)
1 John 2:5
5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
Bible Study Notes
but (KJV) | de | 1161 | (“moreover, next”) introduces a clause and says in effect, “There is more to the story”…”Now for the rest…” | There is more to being a believer than saying you are one. |
keeps | tereo | 5083 | (from teros, “a guard”) | We are to guard or keep God’s commands. |
perfected | telenioo | 5048 | reach the end-stage, i.e. work through the entire process (stages) to reach the final phase (conclusion) | The life of the believer is in a constant state of change. |
in | en | 1722 | properly, in (inside, within) | Our inner life guides our outer life. |
What Are We To Learn?
There are those who say with no outer proof. And there are those who say and have outer proof . When you look at your behavior do you see proof of what you claim? A true believer loves God’s commands (Psalm 119:35, Romans 7:22). Religious knowledge or talking like a Christian does not make you one.
John 14:23 KJV Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.
1 John 2:6
6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
Bible Study Notes
abides | meno | 3306 | to stay, abide, remain | We say, then we truly live our life staying in Christ. |
ought | opheilo | 3784 | to owe, be indebted, i.e. obliged to rectify a debt (“ought”) | To say we are in Christ means we are indebted to Him |
walk | peripateo | 4043 | (from 4012/peri, “comprehensively around,” which intensifies 3961/pateo, “ walk”)- properly, walk around, i.e. in a complete circuit (going “full circle”) | We not only say we also are to imitate how Jesus walked out His life |
What Are We To Learn?
We are reminded again to be a Christian is more than saying so. When we receive salvation through faith in the Son of God we live out our life in gratitude to Him. Our duty as believers will be to imitate the walk of Jesus (John 6:38; 14:31).
1 John 2:7
7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
Bible Study Notes
new | kainos | 2537 | properly, fresh in development or opportunity- because “not found exactly like this before.” | This is not a new commandment |
old | palaios | 3820 | from 3819- ling ago | This is a commandment from the Old Testament |
beginning | arxe | 746 | properly, i.e. the initial (starting point”… i.e. what has priority because ahead of the rest | This Old Testament commandment still holds the position of high rank |
heard | akouo | 193 | properly, to hear (listen), (figuratively) to hear God’s voice, which is part of Him birthing faith within (cf. Romans 10:17) | The Jewish believers knew this commandment |
What Are We To Learn?
What commandment is John talking about?
Deuteronomy 6:5 KJV And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
Leviticus 19:18 KJV Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.
Jesus quotes these in Matthew 22:35-40.
John, through the Holy Spirit, tells us God has always commanded we love each other. Loving others becomes a part of who we are from the start of our new life in Christ.
1 John 2:8
8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
Bible Study Notes
new | kainos | 2537 | (“new in quality”) conveys that something advances or was “not experienced exactly like this before” | The commandment itself is not a new one. |
in | en | 1722 | properly, in (inside, within) | God puts His love in us (Romans 5:5) |
passing away | parago | 3855 | from 3844-para-in the presence of and 71-ago- lead away (Strong’s Concordance) | Our choices should be leading us away from sin |
true | alethinos | 228 | in light of its source or origin, “made of the same material” (substance) | True love is rooted only in God’s love |
already | ede | 2235 | ( a temporal adverb)- already now, i.e. what is not yet strictly present but already (now) impacting the present (‘already now”) | God’s love has an impact on us now. |
What Are We To Learn?
What John is not saying. John is not saying he invented or was given a brand new commandment. So, what is God saying? The newness of this ancient commandment happened when Jesus Christ came as the perfect expression and example of true love. God is our origin of love and Jesus made His love visible (1 John 4:6).
1 John 2:9
9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
Bible Study Notes
hate | miseo | 3404 | properly, to detest (on a comparative basis);.. to love someone or something less than someone (something) else | Saying without the action of obedience has no value to God |
darkness | skotia | 4653 | cognate: a particular brand of moral, spiritual obscurity which blocks God’s light (when faith is lacking) 4655-skotos-(figuratively) the principle of sin carrying its certain results | We live in sinful darkness when absent of faith |
now | arti | 737 | now (this instant), here-and-now | darkness is the reality in your present life |
What Are We To Learn?
Basically, talk is cheap. Do you hate, in comparison to your love for God, all sin.
Matthew 22:37-40 KJV Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
1 John 2:10
10 Whoever loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no cause of stumbling in him.
Bible Study Notes
loves | Cognate: agapao | 25 | properly, to prefer, to love, used of the believer preferring to “live through Christ” | Choosing to love believers as Jesus loves us |
stumbling | skandaion | 4625 | properly, the trigger of a trap…4625/skadalon (“the means of stunbling”) stresses the method (means) of entrapment, i.e. how someone is caught by their own devices (like their personal bias, carnal thinking). | Stumbling comes when we live outside of God’s perferred will |
What Are We To Learn?
Being in the “light as He is in the light” (1 John 1:7), means we love others. This is not the love of our heart but the love of God in our heart. The way we love others must be guided by the Holy Spirit as to be within God’s preferred will. This keeps us from being self governing and stumbling in sin.
1 John 2:11
11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness. He does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
Bible Study Notes
hates | miseo | 3404 | properly, to detest (on a comparative basis); hence, denounce; to love someone or something less than someone (something) else | Hate will skew our view of others. We will see them as less |
darkness | Cognate:skotia | 4653 | darkness- a particular brand of moral, spiritual obscurity which blocks God’s light (when faith is lacking) 4655/skotos properly, darkness ( obscurity); (figuratively) the principle of sin carrying its certain results | Hate is spiritual darkness. It lives in sin, acting out its wickedness |
What Are We To Learn?
We live our life in contrasts. The contrast in this verse is love (light) and hate (darkness). Those who say they have fellowship with God and others but in the heart hate others (love less), love themselves and the world more. They are in reality living and walking in spiritual darkness. We are to love and seek God, not first, but only. It is out of our God given love we can love others properly (1 John 4:19-21).
1 John 2:12
12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.
Bible Study Notes
little children | teknion | 5040 | is built on the root (5043/teknon) which already means “child,” hence adding the sense of “endeared connection.” | We, as a child of God, have a valuable bond with Christ |
have been forgiven | aphiem | 863 | (from 575/apo, “away from” and hiemi, “send.”)- properly, send away, release (discharge). | Forgiveness is not earned, it is received (Acts 4:12) |
for the sake of | dia | 1223 | properly, across (to the other side)… “successfully across” (“throughly”) | We have been successfully delivered from the kingdom of darkness and are now in the kingdom of light |
What Are We To Learn?
These verses remind us who we are in Christ, what we received through Christ, and why God gives.
Who we are
We are children of God, whom He values and considers precious to Himself. As believers we are able to experience His love (Galatians 5:22-23).
What we have received
Having received forgiveness through the blood of Christ, God, through His Son, gives us every spiritual blessing in heaven (Ephesians 1).
Why God gave
Forgiveness does not come in steps or phases. Once redemption is ours, forgiveness is complete. It is not given because we earn it or deserve it. The purpose of forgiveness is to display the grace, mercy, and great love God has for us (Ephesians 2:4).
Life live in gratitude glorifying and honoring our heavenly Father.
Psalm 25:11 KJV For thy name’s sake, O Lord, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.
1 John 2:13
13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
Bible Study Notes
fathers | pater | 3962 | father; one who imparts life and is committed to it | Those who are mature in their faith |
know | ginosko | 1097 | properly, to know, especially through personal experience | God wants us to know Him and His Son personally. Including through personal experience. |
beginning | arxe | 746 | properly, …the initial (starting point) | Salvation marks the beginning of newness in us. |
young men | neanískos; | 3495 | this word comes from 3494 which comes from 3501b neos- new (“new on the scene.”) | These are the spiritually young believers. Like young adults, so to speak. |
evil one | poneros | 4190 | (“painful evil”) focuses on the active outworking of sin, spreading “contagious suffering” (“misery,”pain”). | Rebellion against God (sin) has one outcome, intense suffering |
children | paidion | 3813 | a child under training | Believers are children of God. But we are in different stages of our spiritual maturity |
What Are We To Learn?
Through faith in Christ we become a child of God. However, salvation is only the beginning of our walk in Christ. We are to mature in our fellowship with God. It will be the battles in our lives against evil that will grow us to trust the victory we have in Christ Jesus. The young go to war. Those with experience (mature) are still in the war but they also teach those who are new. If the church has few elders, the young have little guidance, and the children lack proper protection.
1 John 2:14
14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
Bible Study Notes
beginning | arxe | 746 | “the initial (starting) point;” …i.e… what has priority because ahead of the rest (“preeminent”). | Once we are born again, we are to continue to grow and mature in our fellowship with the Father and His Son |
word | logos | 3056 | (from 3004/logo, “speaking to a conclusion”)… is preeminently applied to Christ (Jn 1:1), the eternally pre-existent word who expresses the thoughts of the Father through the Spirit | The word (Christ) lives in us. |
abides | meno | 3306 | to stay, remain | When Christ abides in us, we remain dedicated to searching scripture to have deeper communion with God. |
What Are We To Learn?
Salvation, our new birth, is the end of our old self. And the beginning of our newness of life in Christ. When Christ lives in us we love God’s word and commands. Our view of His word has moved from being a burden to being beneficial.
Psalm 119:10-12 NASB1995 With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments. 11 Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You. 12 Blessed are You, O Lord; Teach me Your statutes.
1 John 2:15
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
Bible Study Notes
love | agapao | 25 | properly,.. used of the believer preferring to live through Christ…DO NOT- Negated Greek Present Imperative- Keep on refusing to do this | Believers do not compromise nor treasure the ways of this world. |
world | kosmos | 2889 | (“world”) world-system… i.e. unaided humanity operating in the “flesh” (rejecting the lordship of Christ). | The worldly reject the deity and the lordship of Christ. Life is lived conformed to the ways of this world. |
in | en | 1722 | (a preposition)- properly, in… (in the realm (sphere) of” | True believers are in this world but we consistently say no to this world. |
love | agape | 26 | properly, love, centering in moral preference.. In the NT, 26 (agape) typically refers to divine love (what God perfers) | God’s love does not value what the world values. God is love. All moral love comes from Him. |
not | ou | 3756 | no (“not”), 3756 (ou) objectively negates a statement, “ruling it out as fact.” | Treasuring the ways and things of this world shows we are absent of the love of God |
What Are We To Learn?
This is the test to know if you have true fellowship with God. Our lives reflect what and whom we truly love in our heart. Who do you prefer to please most? Who influences you the most? Does your heart love and take delight in God’s word and commands? Or do you choose pleasure of your flesh and this world. These are hard but necessary questions for all of us to ask ourselves.
1 John 2:16
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Bible Study Notes
all | pas | 3956 | each, every, each “parts of a totality” | Involves everything, big picture. And each individual piece at the same time |
lusts | epithymia | 1938 | (from 1909/epi, “focused on” and 2372/thymos, “passionate desire”) | Something we are strongly and overwhelmingly passionate toward. Our whole heart seeks it out. |
flesh | sarks | 4561 | properly, flesh (“carnal”), merely of human origin or empowerment | Actions taken out of our desire to please ourself not God. |
boastful pride | alazorteia | 212 | properly, a vagabond (quack) making empty boasts to have “cures” for ridding people of all their ills | Exaggerating who we are, what we have, and what we can do. |
life | bios | 979 | properly, God’s gift of physical life… i.e. the record (account) of how we invested (or spent) our physical lives | That which defines you |
out of | ek | 1537 | properly, out from (and to the outcome); out from within | The world system works out of lawlessness (sinfulness) |
What Are We To Learn?
Everything the world system offers comes out of lust pretending to be light. Satan tempted Jesus with these 3 lusts. Jesus was hungry, Satan tempted Him to turn the stones into bread (lust of the flesh). Satan wanted Jesus to by pass the suffering of the cross. So, he offered Him the kingdoms of the world. But there was 1 condition, Jesus had to worship Satan (lust of the eyes). Last, Satan tempted Jesus to show off His power (pride), (Luke 4:1-13).
Believers are no longer enslaved to the passions of the sinful flesh. Our eyes are, habitually, kept on Jesus the Christ. And our boasting is in Christ Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:31, 2 Corinthians 10:17).
1 John 2:17
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Bible Study Notes
passing away | parago | 3855 | from 3844 para properly, close beside and 71 ago- to lead, bring, carry | This world’s system (way of operating) is self destructing. |
lusts | epithymía | 1939 | (from 1909/epi, “focused on” and 2372/thymus, “ passionate desire”) | The world focuses on its lustful passions while being lead to judgment. |
will | thelema | 2307 | (from 2309/thelo, “to desire, wish”) properly, …typically referring to God’s “preferred will” | God’s will prevails in this dying world |
forever | aion | 165 | (cognate adjective 166/aionios, “age-long”) 166 COGNATE: 166/aionios… properly, “age-like”…(figuratively) the unique quality (reality) of God’s life working in the believer, manifesting His self-existant life as it is in His sinless abode of heaven | God works in believers getting them ready for heaven |
What Are We To Learn?
What does this mean? Well, Jesus put it this way;
Mark 8;34-38 NASB1995 And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 35 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? 37 For what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
The worldly ways are directly opposite of God’s ways. Pleasure, ease, selfishness is the call of the world. God’s calling is one to complete surrender to Him. Including the cross of death to ourself.
1 John 2:18
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
Bible Study Notes
last | esxatos | 2078 | (from esxaton, “end, last”)- properly, last, final…, 2018/esxatos (“future things”) is the root of “eschatology” (“the study of last things”) | We live in the final time before Christ’s return. |
hour | hora | 5610 | (figuratively) a finite “season;” limited time or opportunity to reach a goal | God has ordained when this age will end |
antichrist | antixristos | 500 | (from 473/anti “opposite to, in place of” and 5547/Xristo (“Christ”) | Antichrist’s want to be God |
What Are We To Learn?
John 1:12-13 NASB1995 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
Jesus Christ gives us the privilege to be God’s child through repentance and faith in His name. As children of God we live surrounded by those who oppose the Truth.
There will be, in the future, a man ruled by the power of Satan. He will be allowed to rule for 7 years. This man is “the Antichrist”. Until then, there are many antichrists among the true church. We must be able to recognize the lies and deception these false teachings promote. As well as discern if someone walks in the light or darkness, pretending to be light. Also, this is a warning that time is limited. And the more we study and understand future events in God’s plans, worldly events are no longer random and chaotic. They have a very specific purpose within this “last “hour”.
1 John 2:19
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

1 Timothy 4:1-4 NASB1995 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with [a]great patience and instruction. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
The “professing Christian” looks for false teaching so their flesh feels good. When among those who stand in the righteousness of Christ, they become very offended by the truth. They leave to be part of a different gospel.
1 John 2:20
20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
Bible Study Notes
anointing | xrisma | Cognate:5545 | (from 5548/xrie, “anoint with oil”)- anointing, referring to the teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit guiding believers into God’s fullness | Everyone who repents and receives Jesus as Lord and Savior, receives the indwelling of the Holy Spirit |
Holy One | hagios | 40 | properly, different,…refers to “likeness of nature with the Lord,” i.e. they are “different from the world.” | The Holy Spirit abiding in us will guide us in the Truth |
What Are We To Learn?
John 14:16-17 NASB1995 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
The Holy Spirit will reveal truth to those who are guided and controlled by Him. When false teaching or doctrine comes our way, the Holy Spirit will alert us to the fact something being said or taught does not line up with the word of God. We know the true gospel through the work of the Triune God (John 3:16-21, Ephesians 2:8-10).
1 John 2:21
21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
Bible Study Notes
truth | aletheia | 225 | (from 227/alethes, “true to fact”)- properly, truth (what is true to fact); reality | Believers know the Truth. |
lie | pseudo | 5579 | from 5574; a falsehood, untruth;…5574/pseudomai (to lie) is to embrace illusion, i.e. the opposite of living in genuine reality | To see things different than they are in reality |
What Are We To Learn?
God can not lie. Jesus Christ is the Truth. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth and reveals the Truth to us through holy scripture. Believers are indwelled with the Truth. We know, personally, Truth. Practically this means we live by what God says and means
Truth equals freedom (John 8:31). Lies equal confusion, chaos, and uncertainty because opinions have no hard unmoving foundation(John 8:44, John 10:10). As believers our truth looks like an illusion to unbelievers(Colossians 3:2-4).
1 John 2:22
22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
Bible Study Notes
denies | arneomai | 720 | properly, deny (refuse); contradict, refuse to affirm or confess (identify with)..see also 4716 (srauros (“cross”)- the crosspiece of a Roman cross | Does not confess Jesus as Lord and Savior |

antichrist | antixristos | 500 | properly, opposite to Christ i.e. someone acting in place of (against) Christ | Those who come against the identity of Jesus as the Christ |
What Are We To Learn?
There have been and will be antichrists within the church that professes Christianity.
Matthew 10:32-33 NASB1995 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.
Denying the testimony of Jesus equals denying God. If you do not believe in the name, that is, who Jesus says He is, you will be denied by the Son and the Father. Why? Jesus is God in flesh (John 1:1, John 10:30).
1 John 2:23
23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
Bible Study Notes
have-has he | exo | 2192 | a prim. vb.; to have, hold | Those who belong |
What Are We To Learn?
The difference between true believers and everyone else, believers belong to God. Everyone else lives in this world without God and no real hope (Ephesians 2:12).
1 John 2:24
24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
Bible Study Notes
beginning | arxe | 746 | properly, from the beginning,…i.e. “the initial (starting) point | The faith in-birthed when first hearing the gospel message. |

What Are We To Learn?
Galatians 1:6-7 NASB1995 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.
In order to stay in God the Father and God the Son, we must not stray from the true gospel that was first heard unto salvation.
God is perfect in all He says and does. He has perfect knowledge of all things. Therefore, a new gospel does not exist. Do not be deceived by a gospel message that excites your flesh or makes you feel comfortable with the sinful worldly ways.
1 John 2:25
25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
Bible Study Notes
promise | epaggello | Cognate:1861 | properly, to declare as fitting (apt), i.e. as it legitimately applies | Receiving salvation also means receiving promises |
eternal | aionios | Cognate:166 | derived from 165/aion ”Eternal” (166/aionios) life operates (simultaneously) outside of time, inside of time, and beyond time- which gives everlasting meaning to what is “temporal”- as the believer walks in faith | God’s promises are ours eternally |
What Are We To Learn?
Hebrews 10:23 NASB1995 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful;
Titus 1:1-2 NASB1995 Paul, a bond-servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those chosen of God and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, 2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago,
We are anointed and sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14) through our belief. We received promises from God, “Who can not lie.” In Christ all of God’s promises are “yes and amen”(2 Corinthians 1:20).
The promises of God are a reality believers hold in their life. Do not stray from the true gospel as you await the promise of the return of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ in all His glory (Titus 1:12-13).
1 John 2:26
26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
Bible Study Notes
deceive | planao | 4105 | properly, go astray, get off course, 1. 4105/planao. (roam out if bounds”) emphasizes | There have been and will be false teachers teaching false doctrine |
What Are We To Learn?
Here we are told another purpose for the writing of this letter, do not be led astray. Deception among the body of believers exists. However, ignorance will not be an acceptable excuse because God, the Holy Spirit, provided us with the word of God. The word of God is truth (Psalm 119:160, John 17:17). It is our responsibility to know scripture in order to discern lies.
1 John 2:27
27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
Bible Study Notes
anointing | xrismo | Cognate:5545 | (from 5548/xrio, “anoint with oil”)- anointing refers to the teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit guiding believers into God’s fullness (preferred will, see also 2307/thelema) 5548/xrio -2. For believers, (5548) anointing refers to God revealing and empowering His will through the Spirit | Our anointing of the Holy Spirit guides us to know God’s will |
What Are We To Learn?
Philippians 2:12-13 NASB1995 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
This us another way of saying, do not stray from the true gospel. To work out our own salvation, we must know on a personal basis God and His Son. We come to that knowledge through God’s word and the work of the Holy Spirit in us. We are all taught by a person. But we are to read and study scripture for the purpose of discerning truth from lies.
1 John 2:28
28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
Bible Study Notes

shame | aisxyno | 153 | from aischos (shame, disgrace); to dishonor, make ashamed | The appearance of Christ will reveal our abiding or our dishonor of Him. |
What Are We To Learn?
This verse said another way,
Philippians 2:12-13 NASB1995 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
True salvation begins the work of our no longer being conformed to this world. And working out the newness of life we received through Christ Jesus. What is the picture?
Genesis 5:22-24 NASB1995 Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
Our fellowship with God should be so close when we are taken, our fellowship simply continues.
Christ will return and when He does we will either be confident and run to Him or ashamed and run away from Him (Proverbs 13:5).
1 John 2:29
29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

What Are We To Learn?
Isaiah saw the righteousness of God. This caused him to see the reality of utter and complete unrighteousness. This applies to us also. When we continue to see the righteousness of our Lord God, we seek, love, and desire to be holy as He is holy. We will not obey perfectly but our desire to please God will show up through obedience.
Being born again we no longer identify with the lusts of this world. Our identity lives in Jesus the Messiah.
Romans 8:29-30 NASB1995 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.
