There is violence, plagues, approaching world war, and a sense of unrest in the world. Because of this we live in a time marked by fear. At one time, not to far back, we thought we were safe going to the movies, stores, malls, and sending our children to school but that is vanishing day by day.
What is the answer to our feeling of fear, anxiety, insomnia, and helplessness. People are looking but the answers they find offer temporary relief of escape. Once the pill, alcohol, drugs, entertainment, sex, or whatever distraction is used wears off, the fear is still there. How do we calm our panic attacks, worries, and distresses on a level that gives us hope and life.
Isaiah 41:13 AMP “For I the Lord your God keep hold of your right hand; [I am the Lord], Who says to you, ‘Do not fear, I will help you.’
It is God who gives help, holds, and gives strength to His own. When I cross the street with a young child they may be holding my finger but I have a firm hold on their wrist and hand so even if they let go I do not. If you have faith in the cross, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ know in the deepest part of you that worldly ways will never permanently still your fears.
Looking at fear through God's eyes
Romans 8:15 AMP For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading again to fear [of God’s judgment], but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons [the Spirit producing sonship] by which we [joyfully] cry, “[b]Abba! Father!”
This verse tells us the Holy Spirit releases believers from the bondage of fear. This does not mean as a believer I do not have fear but it means I do not become a slave to the fear. There are many verses concerning fear so to truly understand we must know what God means by fear.
Definitions of fear
There are two kinds of fear in the bible, respectful fear and fight or flight fear.
The fight or flight fear escalates our physical bodies energy and emotions in preparation to run, attack or both. Living in this fear will cause it to dominant all our thinking and feeling. The emotion of fear will consume us and cripple us this is how we are a slave to fear.
This is not what God wants for believers.
Proverbs 1:7 AMP The [reverent] fear of the Lord [that is, worshiping Him and regarding Him as truly awesome] is the beginning and the preeminent part of knowledge [its starting point and its essence]; But arrogant [a]fools despise [skillful and godly] wisdom and instruction and self-discipline.
The respectful fear of God does not mean to be afraid of God but it means to praise, worship, respect and obey Him. These acts of reverential fear toward God brings peace and wisdom. This is done through the power of the Holy Spirit.
What does man fear
- Fear of the Unknown Luke 9:34, 45
- Fear of Danger Acts 27:17, 29
- Fear of being Killed Genesis 26:7, I Kings 19:3
- Fear of the Future Genesis 21:17
God knows we have all kinds of fear so those above are but a few but the most common. Not only does the Holy Spirit release us from the bondage of fear but He is the replacement for our spirit of fear. Faith in God drives out fear.
2 Timothy 1:7 NIV For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
This tells us fear makes us cowards. So many people believe anger is a show of no fear but it shows a lack of character, self-discipline, maturity, and courage. Man's anger is fueled by fear.
Psalm 46:1-3 GW 1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble. 2 That is why we are not afraid even when the earth quakes or the mountains topple into the depths of the sea. 3 Water roars and foams, and mountains shake at the surging waves.
God is our refuge and strength in times of fear. The Holy Spirit will empower us, keep us sane, remind us of the ever staying power of God's love for us, and His hand of protection covers us. How do you move this from being black letters on a white page to being truth in your heart?
How To Let Fear Go
In everything pray God's word because it is alive and active.
Psalm 85:8-9 GW 8 I want to hear what God the Lord says, because he promises peace to his people, to his godly ones. But they must not go back to their stupidity. 9 Indeed, his salvation is near those who fear him, and his glory will remain in our land.
Psalm 103:11, 13, 17, 18 GW 11 As high as the heavens are above the earth— that is how vast his mercy is toward those who fear him... 13 As a father has compassion for his children, so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him.... 17 But from everlasting to everlasting, the Lord’s mercy is on those who fear him. His righteousness belongs to their children and grandchildren, 18 to those who are faithful to his promise, to those who remember to follow his guiding principles.
Philippians 4:5 EXB Let everyone see that you are ·gentle [kind; considerate; patient]. The Lord is ·coming soon [or close at hand; L near]. 6 Do not ·worry [be anxious] about anything, but pray and ·ask God for everything you need [or make your requests known to God], always giving thanks. 7 And God’s peace, which ·is so great we cannot understand it [transcends/surpasses all comprehension], will ·keep [guard] your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
God's word becomes a living reality in our lives when we stay in constant prayer with a submitted heart earnestly seeking God as our hope and help. This is not easy. There have been times when fear would wave over me and moment by moment I would pray for the Holy Spirit to strengthen me and for the peace of Christ to still my mind. I would read the book of Philippians over and over.
Pray for the courage and love of the Holy Spirit to fill you and with His fruit of self-discipline to bring verses to the forefront of your mind.
We must allow God to dispell our spirit of fear before we are able to offer comfort to others crippled by fear.
