Is There More Than Just Being Healed
John 5:14 NASB Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15 The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
We know Jesus is full of truth and mercy. Jesus showed this when he healed the man by the pool. We saw the reaction of the religious leaders, not to the miracle of healing, but to the man breaking one of their Sabbath rules. Jesus is in the process of revealing Who He is.
In verses 14-15 Jesus sheds more light.
He tells the healed man;
1. Look you are well
2. Stop sinning
3. There is something worse than illness
The scene at the pool is a picture of the effect sin has on each person. We are hopelessly dying in our sin with no ability to cure ourself. What is the cure for sin?
Stop sinning! Jesus tells the man, take a careful look at your healing for this is a gateway to no longer living in sin. In other words, your physical healing is for you to comprehend Who I Am. How is the healing and stop sinning connected?
Jesus is saying, I healed you physically and I am the only Way for you to have forgiveness of your sin.
Religion can not save, change the heart, or mind. Religion leaves us dead in our sin while deceiving us that we are not dying in our sin. It is not works of the flesh that removes the guilt of sin, it is the blood of Jesus Christ (1 John 1:5-10).
This man had a first person experience with Jesus. Jesus gave him something no one else could, forgiveness of His sin and freedom from sickness. Then came the command, stop sinning. Why? Because to continue in sin will cause something worse than sickness to happen to you. What is that?
First notice the man did not ask
1. how do I stop sinning and
2. what is the something that is worse than 38 years of debilitating sickness.
John 3:36 NASB He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
What is that something worse? It is dying under the wrath of God with hell as your eternal future.
The verse says, believe in Who Jesus is and you have eternal life. Jesus is saying, believe Who I Am and obey My command to see eternal life. Do not misunderstand and think you will be saved by your works. The point is, we will not truly obey the commands of Christ until we receive faith in Him which will make the love of Christ the motivation for obedience.
John 14:15 NASB “If you love me, you will do the things I command....21 He who knows my commands and obeys them is the one who loves me. And my Father will love him who loves me. I will love him and will show myself to him.”
1 John 5:3 NASB For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.
True obedience comes when our hearts affection is in Christ. Faith works by love. We love God because He loved us first (1 John 4:19). Jesus is offering Himself to this man.
What does the man do?
The healed man goes and he tells the Jewish leaders it was Jesus who healed him. That is the last we hear of the healed man. He went to what he knew, religion.
John 5:16 NASB For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.
The religion of works and self righteousness is blind to Who Jesus is and can only focus on the outside works.
From here Jesus makes it clear Who He is, the religious make it clear how they feel about Him, and we see they understand what He is saying.
