Have You Fallen And Do You Feel Like A Failure

Views 300

Fall and fail have a lot of similarities. In the definitions of fall the word fail is included. Many think once they have fallen they have failed. In one since this is true, such as a business that has fallen into bankruptcy, a marriage that has fallen into disrepair, and so on.

But for those of us who are believers falling into sin does not mean failure as a child of God.

Fall - to cease to be active or strong, to lose strength, to be overthrown or captured; to be destroyed (1913 Webster)

Fail- to lose strength, be unsuccessful, to stop functioning (merriam-webster.com) to be or become deficient in any measure or degree up to total absence, to be altogether cut off from supply (1913 Webster)

The world judges people by exterior looks. A persons education, status, possessions, etc. This is why deception is so easily peddled in this world. Covering up a wicked heart with behavior acceptable to society is not that difficult and is very common. Why?

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable—who can understand it?

CEB - the most cunning heart- it's beyond help. Who can figure it out?

ASV- everyone's heart is deceitful above all things and it is exceedingly corrupt

The world says follow your heart.

God says the heart is sick, wicked, and can not lead you to truth.

Genesis 3 tells us Satan is the most crafty of all God's creation. Another word for crafty is cunning.

Cunning- craftiness, skill in deceit

Adam and Eve were deceived by Satan, disobeyed God, and sin or deceit entered into the heart of every person born from that time forward. Had God failed mankind?

Genesis 3:15 HCSB I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.

No! Man was now fallen but for God there is no failure. God is the God of mercy, love, and hope.

Those with saving faith fall but they do not fail. Why?

Ezekiel 36:26 HCSB I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will place My Spirit within you and cause you to follow My statutes (boundaries) and carefully observe My ordinances (judgments).

We, believers, have been given a new heart and a new spirit. Now our heart loves God, His word, His ways, and desires to know truth in order to walk with and obey Him. Our hearts are now soft and ready to hear, receive, and walk truth. We no longer follow our heart we run after God.

However, believers still live in a corrupt body that has not lost its desire for sinful behavior. We fall and miss the mark of God's holiness but we do not have to fail.

1 John 3:4 HCSB Everyone who commits sin also breaks the law; sin is the breaking of law. 5 You know that He was revealed so that He might take away sins, and there is no sin in Him. 6 Everyone who remains in Him does not sin; everyone who sins has not seen Him or known Him.

Believers are in Christ Jesus and He is in them therefore, though,we fall our heart is not looking to practice sin.

1 John 1:7 HCSB But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say, "We have no sin," we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say, "We don't have any sin," we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

When we sin, we do not have to stay there nor beat ourself up. We confess our sin and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us. As believers we are working out our own salvation, fighting the good fight of faith and are being sanctified by the truth, God's word. We are also engaged in spiritual warfare and with our own flesh. Side bar here, if anyone told you coming to Jesus the Christ would stop suffering, pain, temptation, and trouble, well, they lied. We fall but we do not stop listening to or receiving instruction, correction, and direction from God's word. It is not the fall that enslaves us, it is the failure to get back up.

John 8:31 HCSB So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, you really are My disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."... 43 Why don't you understand what I say? Because you cannot listen to My word. 44 You are of your father the Devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of liars. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me.

Jesus is talking to hard hearted Jews who do not believe they are a slave to anyone or anything. So, when Jesus tells them the truth will set them free they have no idea what He is saying.

V33) they ask, "What do you mean by saying, you will be free?"

Answer - you are practicing sin therefore you are a slave to sin.

Those are fighting words to someone who is prideful and righteous or right in their own eyes.

  1. Their hard heart closes their ears and they can not hear truth about themself or God
  2. Their will wants what their father Satan wills which is to protect the lies. The lies of Satan are compatible to their sick, wicked, and cunning heart.
  3. The truth in itself causes them to disbelieve

Believers no longer have this attitude of heart because their heart is of their Father in heaven.

When we as believers fall into sin we are not to carry that burden. When the Holy Spirit convicts and your heavenly Father brings correction, discipline, and instruction do not allow these difficult and painful times of suffering be a stumbling block.

How? Instead fill your heart and mind:

1 John 4:9 HCSB Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

God loved us first. Taken further, God loved us when we were His enemy and hated Him. This means God's love for us is not dependent upon us. God does not love me based on my doing or not doing.

Peter denied knowing and being a follower of Jesus the Christ. Jesus opened up the line of communication with Peter first and Peter experienced God's mercy, grace, and love. John was at the crucifixion of Jesus and witnessed His mercy, grace, and love as Jesus ask him to love His mother as his own. Jesus expressed before everyone at His cross the true heart of God:

Luke 23:34 ESV And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." And they cast lots to divide his garments.

God's mercy, grace, and love will draw us in ever closer. Sometimes it is with the utmost joy. Other times it is lonely, hurtful, and very dark. It is in these times we will:

John 8:58 ESV Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am." 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

We will pick up stones to throw at the Great I Am or:

Romans 8:35 HCSB Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Can affliction or anguish or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: Because of You we are being put to death all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. 37 No, in all these things we are more than victorious through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, hostile powers, 39 height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!

NOTHING has the POWER to separate us from the love of God. Why? In Christ we are MORE than conquerors.

Ephesians 2:4 HCSB But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love that He had for us, 5 made us alive with the Messiah even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace!

Ephesians 3:16 HCSB I pray that He may grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power in the inner man through His Spirit, 17 and that the Messiah may dwell in your hearts through faith. I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God's love, 19 and to know the Messiah's love that surpasses knowledge, so you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Believers do not believe the lie of failure when you fall short of God's holiness. Repent and know God's love is the most precious gift.
