Church Of Thyatira
Revelation 2:18-29 (NIV) 18 “To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze. 19 I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first. 20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. 21 I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling.
22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. 23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. 24 Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you, 25 except to hold on to what you have until I come.’
26 To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations— 27 that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery’—just as I have received authority from my Father. 28 I will also give that one the morning star. 29 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
Jesus told the church in Ephesus "I am the One who holds the seven stars in His right hand, the One who walks among the seven gold lamp stands. Jesus says the seven stars are the pastors and the seven lampstands are the churches. (Revelation 1:20)
Jesus told the church in Smyrna "I am the first and last. He was dead and became alive".
Jesus told the church in Pergamum "I am the sharp-two edged sword.
Hebrews 4:12 tells us the Word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword.
Jesus is now speaking to the church in Thyatira. We are told He is the Son of God with eyes like flames of fire and feet like glowing bronze. Jesus first described Himself this way in Revelation 1:14. Why eyes like a flame of fire? What is the purpose?
Fire represents judgment?
Zephaniah 1:17 And I will bring distress upon men, so that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the Lord; their blood shall be poured out like dust and their flesh like dung. 18 Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord’s indignation and wrath. But the whole earth shall be consumed in the fire of His jealous wrath, for a full, yes, a sudden, end will He make of all the inhabitants of the earth.
Zephaniah 3:8 “Therefore wait for me,” declares the Lord, “for the day when I rise up to seize the prey. For my decision is to gather nations,to assemble kingdoms, to pour out upon them my indignation, all my burning anger; for in the fire of my jealousy all the earth shall be consumed.
2 Peter 3:7 But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
Jesus eyes of fire represent judgment. His feet glowing like bronze are feet that do not move from their stance. Jesus has, will, and never will change.
What does Jesus know about the believers in Thyatira?
Jesus knows their "love, faith, service, and endurance," however this did not apply to everyone.
What does Jesus have against them?
The church was tolerating "that womam Jezebel." She was teaching in this church to eat food sacrificed to idols and to sin sexually.
Sexual sin - be unfaithful to Christ, while posing as His true follower (HELPS Word-studies)
The Greek word is porneia which is the root of the English word pornography.
What does this mean?
Jesus is straight up saying to all those who profess to follow Him but feast their eyes on sexual immorality He will hold this against you. Our culture today is full of sexual immorality. Jezebel is busy teaching idolatry and sexual immorality not just on TV but in movies, music and the church.
The word eat means devour, consume (as rust does). The word eat is future tense meaning those who devour idolatry and sexual immorality will begin to be consumed and devoured by the very thing they believe they control.
What does Jesus want from the church?
Turn back to Him through repentance. Stop and allow your mind and actions to be changed to agree with God's word. Did that happen with Jezebel? No, she is not willing and refused to repent and stop. Jesus gave her time to repent and turn to Him but she did not desire to do so.
To will - desire, delight
Jezebel was not willing because she took no delight in letting go of her flesh and what she saw as benefits.
What happened and what will happen to the Jezebels of the church and her followers?
Jesus will make her and all who follow her suffer on a bed anguish (Anguish means extreme suffering, grief, and pain) They will be struck dead for their rebellion. God warns of judgment and holds out mercy to repentance and we make the choice between life, death, blessing, and curses. God is long suffering but sin does not go unpunished forever, judgment will come.
God's judgment on unrepentant churches and pretend Christians is to show other churches and believers He is holy. It is to let posers, pretenders, and hypocrites know that God, Jesus Christ, knows the thought and motive of every person and He pays every person accordingly.
Jesus does not speak a message of judgment only. There is spoken beside judgment, a message of grace, mercy, and hope that is in the future of true believers. Jesus message to those who love and obey Him is a message of hold tight to your faith, keep your heart on Me, continue doing good and patiently endure. Jesus was not asking more of them but for them to not be lead astray by the lies of Jezebel. Those who do not listen and follow the lies of Satan taught through Jezebel's will have a great reward.
Enduring until the end is not easy but a promise has been made for those who remain faithful. Christ will give them authority over the nations. They will rule nations under His authority.
What does this mean?
Authority - (delegated power) refers to the authority God gives to His saints - authorizing them to act to the extent they are guided by faith (His revealed word) - (HELPS Word-studies)
The faithful will be given authority and the Morning Star. Who is the Morning Star?
Revelation 22:16 “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you and to give you assurance of these things for the churches. I am the Root (the Source, the Life) and the Offspring of David, the radiant and bright Morning Star.”
Jesus Christ is the Morning Star
Jesus makes clear the outcome for those who choose to be faithful and those who choose to go astray. Each person will make their choice and receive the consequence.
