Armour of God - Breastplate Of Righteousness, Part 5
Ephesians 6:14 Stand therefore [hold your ground], having tightened the belt of truth around your loins and having put on the breastplate of integrity and of moral rectitude and right standing with God,
We are putting on the whole armour of God. We will use this armour to stand our ground against the strategies of the devil which is spiritual strongholds and fortifications against the truth.
Our first piece of armour is truth
When we receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior we have received the Truth (John 14:6). Satan's attacks will be against God's word. He will attempt to create doubt in God's faithfulness and/or pervert God's word. Jesus Christ is the foundation on which we stand. He is the truth in which we are clothed. He is our strength and might. It is Jesus Christ the rulers of darkness fear not you.
The belt of truth holds everything together.
It is to our advantage to grow in knowledge and maturity in the Lord God.
The second piece of armour is the breastplate of righteousness
our dependency is on Jesus Christ
Philippians 3:8 AMP Yes, furthermore, I count everything as loss compared to the possession of the priceless privilege (the overwhelming preciousness, the surpassing worth, and supreme advantage) of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord and of progressively becoming more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him [of perceiving and recognizing and understanding Him more fully and clearly]. For His sake I have lost everything and consider it all to be mere rubbish (refuse, dregs), in order that I may win (gain) Christ (the Anointed One), 9 And that I may [actually] be found and known as in Him, not having any [self-achieved] righteousness that can be called my own, based on my obedience to the Law’s demands (ritualistic uprightness and supposed right standing with God thus acquired), but possessing that [genuine righteousness] which comes through faith in Christ (the Anointed One), the [truly] right standing with God, which comes from God by [saving] faith.
1 Corinthians 1:30 AMP But it is from Him that you have your life in Christ Jesus, Whom God made our Wisdom from God, [revealed to us a knowledge of the divine plan of salvation previously hidden, manifesting itself as] our Righteousness [thus making us upright and putting us in right standing with God], and our Consecration [making us pure and holy], and our Redemption [providing our ransom from eternal penalty for sin].
A believers righteousness or right standing with God is not through ourselves but by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Do not believe the lie that your good works will in anyway make you acceptable to God (Isaiah 64:6).
To stand our ground in a practical sense the breastplate of righteousness covers the heart. Salvation gives us a new heart, one that is engraved with the law of God. The new heart loves God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit because God's love has been poured into the believers heart through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:1-5). So, we are made righteous through Christ's righteousness and His love in us leads us to be obedient to God.
In the age of grace, Christ is written on the believers heart. Jesus Christ fulfilled all of God's laws perfectly so we, as believers, are to walk out our lives in obedience to the word of God through faith in Christ and submission to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians tells us what God expects from us. When we live our life through the righteousness of Christ we will not fall prey to the lies of Satan. We will stand firm on our foundation of truth. It is when we choose to live outside of obedience to God that we become an easy target for Satan's strategies of doubt, fear, and anger. We become entangled in pride and are susceptible to falling into a works for acceptance based relationship with God.
How we walk out and represent the One Who is in us
- We have been called of God to be set apart and holy as God is holy (Ephesians 1:4)
- We have been called to a glorious hope in Christ. Others are to see the hope we have in Christ when things look hopeless (Ephesians 1:18).
- We have been born again in Christ Jesus to do the good works of God which He planned for us before the foundations of the world(Ephesians 2:8-10).
- We are to live in humility, unselfishness, gentleness, and patience (Ephesians 4:2).
- We are to live our lives expressing God's truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).
- Ephesians 4:21 to 5:7 These verses give direct instructions on how believers are to live and not live.
John MacArthur - Even though every believer is clothed with the righteousness of Christ, we must still live so as to manifest integrity and uprightness in our personal life. As has been well said "When a man is clothed in practical righteousness, he is impregnable. Words are no defense against accusation, but a good life is." So if our conscience is void of offense toward God and man, we are less vulnerable to the devil who has no target to shoot at.
James 1:22 AMP But be doers of the Word [obey the message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth].
The truth, Christ, is our righteousness and to
stand firm we live our life reflecting that truth.
