Growing in Jesus is for new believers and those who want to refresh their minds in the elementary things of scripture. This is because we know very little about God, His Word, or His ways. Growing in Jesus will help us, including me, to grow more and more spiritually mature in Christ.

Our Eternal Destination
Every person’s eternal destination is either heaven or hell. Faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to God in heaven (John 14:6). Jesus tells us in John 3:3,5 a person must be born again to enter into heaven. Born again carries the picture of an infant. Newborn babies represent new life.
1 Corinthians 5:17 KJV Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Romans 6:4 KJV Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Salvation Brings Newness Of Life
At the moment of salvation, we are a new creation. Our new creation is in Christ for the good works of God (Ephesians 2:10). We begin walking out a way of life that is brand new to us. This “newness of life” is foreign and unknown. Many questions come concerning the “how do I do this?”
It is the elementary or fundamental teachings in the bible that help us grow on the right foundation, Christ Jesus (1 Corinthians 3:11).
Newborn Babes
1 Peter 2:2 KJV As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
Being a new creation in Christ causes a graving for ” pure spiritual milk.” The pure spiritual milk feeds our need to learn about God’s character.
1. All Scripture If From God
2 Timothy 3:16 KJV All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
2 Peter 1:20 KJV Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
God’s word is God Himself talking to us. He spoke to men through the Holy Spirit, and they wrote what He said. God reveals Himself through scripture. There is no other way to know God. Yes, we experience God on many levels, but our experiences are not to usurp scripture. This brings us to:
2. The Bible Is Sound Doctrine
Ephesians 4:14 KJV That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
Those new to faith in Christ need biblical doctrine to guide them in truth. Our experiences are not enough for us to walk in our newness of life. Reading scripture every day will renew our mind. Part of the growth process is to have our mind renewed to the ways and thoughts of God. (Romans 12:1-2)
3. Learn Of God
John 17:1 KJV Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, 2 as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
God gives eternal life through His Son. For the believer, eternal life is growing in more understanding and discernment of God’s character. When I was first saved, all I knew was, God loved me, and He wanted me to know Who He is. I determined that day I would spend the rest of my days here on earth getting to know Jesus. I did not know this verse existed at the time.
These are but a few of the building blocks we use to grow. For Example, a child or new believer would describe salvation in terms of – Christ died for my sins. The truth is, salvation involves much more. Salvation encompasses the perfect holy life of Jesus the God Man who bore our sins. It also includes Christ Jesus – God in flesh, Who cannot die because there never was any sin in Him. Growing in Jesus is the starting point of our relationship with the true living God and His Son through scripture. Remember, all scripture is God speaking to us.
The Purpose Of Growth
1 Corinthians 13:11 KJV When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
Mature people handle life differently than children. It is the sudden trials of life that show who we really are on in the inside. God will put our faith through the fire of trials. Will your foundation be sand or the Cornerstone (Matthew 7:24-27).
Understand, this is but the tip of a bottomless iceberg. We will grow in Jesus until He comes for us, or we go to Him. Paul put it best:
Philippians 3:12 KJV Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
None of us are what God wants us to be. The mark of our life is to grow from glory to glory into the image of our Lord and Savior, Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:18).
